Help NJIECPAC Help You

First of all, what is a "PAC"? A PAC is Political Action Committee, or more simply put, a special interest group.

The New Jersey Electrical Contractors is a special interest group, and your Government Affairs Committee wisely formed the PAC to represent you.

More formally, a PAC has been defined as a group of two or more people, a corporation, or an association, which in a calendar year contributes or expects to contribute at least $4,300 to (1.) promote the candidacy of persons for electric public office, and/or (2.) promote or defeat public questions. The definition goes on to expect that a PAC will continue to support political candidates and work to support or defeat proposed laws year after year.

What Does Your PAC Do For You?

Your PAC in election years determines which candidates or incumbents are likely to be more sympathetic or understanding of your issues as an electrical contractor trying to make a living in New Jersey. Your PAC supports those officials sometimes through an endorsement, simply putting the weight of the NJEC behind a particular candidate or incumbent, or more frequently by contributing financially to the Election Fund of that candidate or incumbent. As we all know, running for office is not cheap.

Perhaps more importantly, your PAC watches the daily events in Trenton and beyond. Virtually everyday someone somewhere is working on new laws and regulations or is trying to adjust those already on the books. Your PAC watches those laws and regulations which affect you as an electrical contractor. Sometimes the changes are beneficial and are supported, but other times the changes are detrimental and your PAC is there to let the legislature or regulatory body the downfalls in their choices. Think about who has a say in your license. Think about your permits. Think about the last turf battle you had with the electric company.

More recently, your PAC has expanded its forces and is taking on more chores. Now your PAC watches not only laws and regulations that address electrical contractor issues specifically, but it watches for any political actions that affect you as a business person. Here are a few examples:

  • Did you know that during the last state budget debate some suggested business taxes to be raised?
  • Did you know that currently there are discussions in Trenton to repeal the "uniformity clause"?

This would allow municipalities on their own to raise taxes on your business property even more and let you carry more weight from municipal costs. Your PAC fought and is fighting these and many other efforts.

You probably did not know all of this, did you? Your PAC did. Your PAC, like you, works hard everyday to protect you as an electrical contractor and as a business person here in New Jersey. if you think things are good, fight to keep it that way. If you think things are bad, know that there are efforts to make it worse. While you work, your PAC works for you. Support your PAC financially. The reality is that limited funding equals limited results. Unfortunately, PAC's need support and money. Fortunately, your have a PAC.
