If you're considering a career as an electrician, there's no better way to prepare than by listening to those who’ve already built successful careers in the field. At our recent members event at Glenbrook Brewery, we spoke with experienced contractors from across New Jersey to gather their best advice for aspiring electricians and apprentices. From taking initiative to understanding your tools, here’s what they had to say:

Start Young and Stay Alert
Jared from Dolak Electric emphasized the importance of learning early and staying sharp on the job: “Start young, pay attention, know what tools do what. That’s big time. If you're watching somebody, know what they're thinking—have that tool ready to go. That just gets you going and going, and soon you'll start doing the work on your own.”
Take Initiative and Keep Learning
Tim from All Services Mechanical & Electrical stressed that learning the trade is ultimately up to you. He advised, “Take initiative and never stop. It's your responsibility to learn the trade—no one’s going to do it for you. Make sure you're persistent in learning.”

Get in School and Track Your Hours
Dan from Globus Electric offered practical advice that every apprentice should follow: “Get in school, do your hours, document it all.”
The Bottom Line
A career in the electrical trade can be rewarding, challenging, and full of opportunities, but it requires commitment, curiosity, and consistency. Whether you're just starting out or looking to level up your skills, take it from the pros: pay attention, take initiative, stay organized, and never stop learning.
