Watts Good? A Lot—Thanks to NJIEC’s Newest Member

Updated: 1 day ago

At the NJ Independent Electrical Contractors Association, we’re proud to highlight members who power New Jersey, such as new business owner Matt Kurucz, founder of Watts Good Electric.

Matt jumped into entrepreneurship and NJIEC membership at the same time. “I just joined, I don’t think the ink was even dry on the check before I was at my first member meeting in May,” he joked. That meeting featured a pool system seminar, which immediately came in handy.

“A friend reached out to me about a pool motor burning out,” Matt said. “Thanks to what I learned at the meeting, their new setup is now up to code—and much safer for every pool party to come.”

Electricity Runs in the Family

Inspired by his grandfather, a master electrician, Matt found his calling in the trades. “He raised a family of four and was always the go-to handyman. I couldn’t sit behind a desk, and this industry is never stale—always growing, always changing.”

Matt entered the field in 2012, right around Superstorm Sandy. “That was a wild introduction,” he recalled. “But it showed me how essential our work is, especially with generators, and how we can truly make a difference.”

Staying Current in a Changing Field

“The technology keeps evolving,” Matt said. “Even in just over a decade, things have changed a lot. I’m excited to see how I grow along with it.”

His advice for newcomers? “Study that codebook. Just because someone shows you how they do something doesn’t mean it’s code-compliant. And know what needs to be done before you leave the shop. The worst thing an electrician can do is get creative just to make something work.”

Now leading his own business, he takes pride in every job. “Seeing the reaction from customers when we make their home safer or smarter is the best part.”

“When the work slows down—which it rarely does—I love hiking, biking, OneWheeling, traveling with my girlfriend and our dogs, and eating my way across the country.”

We’re excited to have Matt and Watts Good as part of the NJIEC family and look forward to watching his journey as both an electrician and entrepreneur.
